9 Latin Rhythms Every Producer Should Know
Learn about foundational rhythms from around the world and get some quick tips on how to program them yourself.
March 13th, 2026

This guide breaks down nine essential Latin rhythms — Clave, Dembow, Cumbia, Samba, Merengue, Festejo, Bossa Nova, Bachata, and Baile Funk — that every producer should know, with quick tips for programming them in any DAW.
As the world continues to discuss stadium-sized performances and chart-shaking releases from artists like Bad Bunny and Bruno Mars, we’re zooming out to look at the sound of music on a global scale.
Over the next few weeks, we’re celebrating the foundational Latin grooves that have not-so-subtly shaped the DNA of current popular music. From Afro-Cuban roots to Brazilian beaches, these rhythms didn’t stay local—they became universal sonic infrastructure. At UJAM, we stand at this unique intersection of tradition and modern production.
Get into the rhythm yourself! Our rhythmic drum and percussion plug-ins are on sale until May 3rd.
1. 🇨🇺 Cuba – Salsa & The Clave
- The Origin: Born from Cuban Son and refined in NYC.
The Rhythm: Everything locks into the Clave (a 3-2 or 2-3 pattern). It’s not just percussion; it’s the structural law.
Tip: Align your snares or claps with the clave accents to let the rhythm breathe. Don't fight the tension—work with it.

2. 🇵🇷 Puerto Rico – Reggaeton & The Dembow
- The Origin: Evolved from Panamanian "Reggae en Español" and Jamaican dancehall, then refined into a global powerhouse in San Juan.
The Rhythm: The 3-3-2 "Dembow" pattern is the engine of modern pop. To make yours stand out, try swapping the standard electronic snare for organic woodblocks or conga slaps. Layering a subtle clave underneath adds a "3D" feel to the bounce.

3. 🇨🇴 Colombia – Cumbia
- The Origin: A blend of African drums and Indigenous flutes from the Caribbean coast.
The Rhythm: Cumbia is a hypnotic, "galloping" 2/4. The magic is in the shuffling 16th-note swing of the güira (metal scraper). While traditionally felt in two, it sits perfectly in a modern 4/4 grid with a heavy 16th-note swing. It’s an incredible tool for adding organic, circular movement to otherwise static electronic tracks.

4. 🇧🇷 Brazil – Samba
- The Origin: The high-energy pulse of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival.
The Rhythm: Samba is all about the Surdo (bass drum). Unlike Western "four-on-the-floor," the heavy emphasis is on the second beat. For an authentic feel, slightly "push" your 16th-note percussion so it sits just ahead of the grid.

5. 🇩🇴 Dominican Republic – Merengue
- The Origin: The rapid-fire national dance of the DR.
The Rhythm: This is a high-BPM beast (120–160 BPM). The core is the Tambora drum, providing a "slap-pop" texture. It’s the ultimate rhythmic "energy drink" for producers looking to build high-velocity transitions or peak-hour club tracks.

6. 🇵🇪 Peru – Festejo (The Cajón Groove)
- The Origin: The Afro-Peruvian coastal communities of Chincha and Lima.
The Rhythm: This is the home of the Cajón. Festejo is a high-speed, polyrhythmic 6/8 or 12/8 feel. For producers, it’s a masterclass in "wood-based" percussion. The boxy, mid-range "pop" of the Cajón provides a unique alternative to the metallic snap of a snare.

7. 🇧🇷 Brazil – Bossa Nova
- The Origin: The sophisticated "New Trend" of 1950s Rio.
The Rhythm: This is the blueprint for Lo-Fi and Chillhop. It’s a slowed-down Samba that’s "cooled" with jazz harmonies. Use light shakers, rim clicks, and nylon-string guitar patterns. It proves that a groove doesn't need to be loud to be powerful.

8. 🇩🇴 Dominican Republic – Bachata
- The Origin: Once marginalized "bitterness" music, now a global romantic hit.
The Rhythm: Bachata is about clean, dry separation. Bright, arpeggiated guitars with heavy chorus sit over a bongo pattern that slams on the 4th beat. It’s perfect for creating a sense of intimacy and "pocket" in a mix.
9. 🇧🇷 Brazil – Baile Funk & Phonk
- The Origin: Born in the favelas of Rio, inspired by Miami Bass, and recently evolved through the viral "Brazilian Phonk" scene.
The Rhythm: This is raw, "punk" energy maximized. The classic Tamborzão (a distorted percussion loop) has been pushed to the extreme. Driven by TikTok edits and the rise of Phonk, this new wave features aggressive, blown-out sub-bass and high-octane vocal chops. It is the most maximized, high-pressure evolution of Latin rhythm today.
